The Harz Mountains – land of ‘German fairy tales’! This area is peppered with small towns and villages full of steep-roofed houses in narrow, cobblestone streets, surrounded by forests, streams and mountains.
THE HARZ NATIONAL PARK extends across two federal states, Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt and prior to 1990 the border between the two states was also the border between East and West Germany, complete with fence and fortified frontier! The area is famous for its historic silver mines, exceptional scenery and abundance of wildlife.
GOSLAR has over 1,000 years of history, its old town and the Rammelsberg mine achieved UNESCO World Heritage status in 2010. Discover beautiful old timber-framed buildings, an 11th century Imperial Palace, many churches, museums and picturesque streets.
WERNIGERODE, situated in the foothills of the Harz Mountains, is dominated by its fairytale castle which towers 300 feet above the town. Its here we board the CASTLE ROAD TRAIN for a visit to this romantic baroque CASTLE. Originally built as a Romanesque hunting lodge for 12th century German counts, its tumultuous history includes several renovations in completely new architectural styles. The castle features ornate chandeliers, wood carvings, and tapestries. A stroll around the castle ramparts reveals stunning vistas over Wernigerode.
The HARZ NARROW GAUGE RAILWAYS are one of the world’s greatest steam adventures! The network is made up of the Harzquebahn, Selketalbahn and the Brockenbahn of which we will ride all three;
HARZQUERBAHN – Wernigerode to Drei Annen Hohne. This restored steam-hauled railway leaves the station with much ceremony and clanging of bells before it climbs up and over the Harz range, working spectacularly hard under great pillars of steam.
BROCKENBAHN – Drei Annen Hohne – Brocken. Experience this legendary journey, climbing 3,700 feet to the highest peak in northern Germany to enjoy the stunning panorama of the surrounding Harz National Park.
SELKETALBAHN – Alexisbad to Gernrode. This romantic rail journey runs through the very heart of verdant forests and is one of the region’s best kept secrets! . Enjoy the dramatic natural scenery of the middle Harz region as the train follows the course of the Selke Valley.
QUEDLINBURG is an exceptional example of a medieval European town, both the medieval court and the old town have been added to the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage list. Almost all of the buildings in the town centre are timber-framed, some dating back to the 16th Century.
